86 mins. Rated R.
It certainly seems like director Brianne Murphy (To Die, To Sleep) had a lot of ideas with Blood Sabbath. She just never put them to good use in the movie itself.
David (Anthony Geary, UHF) has returned home from the war without much direction. When he comes across a beautiful woodland witch and falls for her, he begins the target of this villainous coven and the Queen of Witches herself, Alotta.
Not a ton to say about Blood Sabbath because so little actually happens, but I got the sense that Murphy had a lot to say and never could get it to translate to the screen. It seems to be a look at those coming home from the war, especially lost in the society that no longer recognizes them. There’s some to be said about the relationship between men and nature, specifically in how Yyala (Susan Damante, The Adventures of the Wilderness Family) and Alotta showcase the spectrum of nature’s sway over David. You can also point to the free-love hippie style of the late 60s/early 70s in opposition to his formally broken veteran status, and I’d like to believe it all, but Blood Sabbath only succeeds in being a sleep-inducing exercise in boredom. It’s dull and lifeless, and I’d probably watch Werewolf Woman 10 times over before subjecting myself to this drab and soulless film.
While it’s commendable to aim high for your symbols and conflict, Blood Sabbath is never once able to convey anything of value. Beyond that, it’s a bore, and I’m sure within the week, my viewing experience will completely wash from my memory. So consider this a reminder for me that, Yes, I did see that movie, and a reminder for you to never witness it.
